Melbourne, meet your Magic Mike Live men

June 10, 2021

Based on the hit movies, Magic Mike Live is premiering in Melbourne this June at Birrarung Marr to give women the most empowering, exhilarating and unexpected experience of their lives.

Conceived and directed by Channing Tatum, Magic Mike Live offers an immersive and thrilling dance and acrobatic spectacular for audiences. The cast of this first-class experience include some of the world’s sexiest, most talented dancers who have worked with globally with the likes of JLo, Katy Perry, Usher, Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, Charli XCX, Cody Simpson, Guy Sebastian, Backstreet Boys, Ray J, Jason Derulo, Pitbull, FloRida, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, the Jonas Brothers and many more.

We all know and love Channing Tatum’s unique flair and iconic moves in Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL, yet the dancers have been instructed to take that ‘essence’ and be their individual selves while on stage. It is why each dancer has a different body type and shape, cultural background, personality and skillset so that the show can holistically cater to every person’s desires in the room.

“No one can be Channing, so he tells us dancers to be YOURSELF,” said American dancer Brian Segnaro.

“People come back so often (up to 20 or 30 times) and the energies are different depending on where you sit,” added Charles Bartley (Dance Captain, Magic Mike Live).

Going with the tagline “crafted for a woman’s gaze but directed at a woman’s heart” is the epitome of Magic Mike Live. The male dancers explain that the show is designed to provide a sense of magic for women who engage with the show, no matter where they are from or what their circumstances are for being there.

“It is all about permission,” said dancer Ned Zaina. “Sometimes, we see girls who are scared to get pulled up on stage. In these circumstances, it is not about dancing on top of them, rather it might be sitting next to them and just having a conversation.”

The cast and creatives are the cream of the crop, producing an extremely high calibre of art from the writing to the lighting that all blossoms under one ‘roof’. Magic Mike Like has created the largest purpose-built Spiegeltent in the world, named The Arcadia. It is a fully-functional, luxurious two-storey design, which boasts a 360-degree seating arrangement and stage elevations. “There is really nothing else like it in the world,” said choreographer Alison Faulk.

So who are some of the men that will be entertaining you?

Meet the cast!

Ned studied full time dance with APO Arts Academy & Patrick Studios Australia , where he completed his Advanced Diploma in Fine Arts & Performing Arts degrees as well as studying full time ballet under Brian Nolan. Ned was offered his first professional contract with Norwegian Cruise Lines and since then has been a principal dancer for Opera Australia nationally over many contracts; Julie Tamor’s ‘The Magic Flute’, ‘The Love For Three Oranges’, premiere of ‘Turandot’ (Dance Captain) and the touring season of Graeme Murphy’s ‘The Merry Widow’.

“I was working for Opera Australia for four and a bit years in both Sydney and Melbourne. It was a phenomenal experience working with choreographers like Graeme Murphy. When I saw the casting call for Magic Mike Live, I was in Bring It On The Musical. I got a call from a friend of mine who said, “you need to go audition for this show”. I had no idea what this ‘show’ was about at all. I went to the call and was successful! The choreographer, Alison, asked if I would learn aerial for the show. Magic Mike Live as a company will take you for what you have and then enhance your strengths, like learning an instrument or doing acrobatics. At first, it was the scariest time of my life stepping off the 10m platform, but it was one of the best experiences.”

Charles Bartley

Charles has performed alongside international recording sensations Katy Perry, Bebe Rexha, Kylie Minogue, Kesha, Kelly Rowland, Sam & The Whomp, Rita Ora and Louis Fonsi.

“I was the Season 2 Runner Up on So You Think You Can Dance Australia. It was pretty much the first job I ever did. I had three days off in three months. I honestly think I couldn’t do it now. The energy I had as a 19-year-old got me through the challenging moments. The thing I remember most was laughing—the contestants were amazing. It pretty much set me up for my career because Kelley Abbey (renowned creative director and choreographer) worked on the show. People saw me as fun so I expressed more of that on camera rather than the troubled moments. People want to see people thrive and push through. It was a wild experience and something I am very grateful for.”

Brian Siregar

Brian is from Aurora, Colorado and started off dancing in the Bboy style. Pursuing performance, he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy where he studied musical theatre and dance. After graduating with a BFA in performing arts he took the industry by storm. Brian has worked with celebrities such as Snoop Dogg, Paula Abdul, Fergie, Dove Cameron, and more. He can be seen on television ontosh.0, and has worked in many commercials including Toyota and Nissan.

“I first did Magic Mike Live in London. I originally watched the show in Las Vegas and that was when I realised that these dancers are properly ‘dancing’. I knew that it was going to be hard work and it has truly exceeded all my expectations. IT WAS FIRE! The show is just physically tough, not everyone can do it. There is breakdance, aerials, quick changes and running around. It is very physically draining because we do 10 shows a week; three shows on a Saturday alone, so it is intense—but amazing.”

Nick Phillips

Dancing since the age of 11, Nick has trained in all genres of dance and completed three years of full-time training in Dance and Musical Theatre at Patrick Studios Australia. Nick comes from a family of dancers, both parents having danced professionally with the Australian Ballet Company as well as his Uncle and Aunt performing all over Europe with companies such as Stuttgart Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, Deutch Oper Berlin and Theatre du Capitole de Toulouse to name a few. He built up an extensive list of credits back in Australia having performed with artists such as Havana Brown, Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian, Brian McFadden, Anthony Callea, Zoe Badwi, Aston Merrygold, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Red Foo as well as being a regular on TV shows Dancing with the Stars and Australia’s Got Talent.

“I left Australia in 2016 and lived there for four years. During my flight to Los Angeles, I wrote a list of goals I wanted to achieve. One of those goals was to a book a dance job that would get me back to Australia. I never expected to be back here for nearly two years on a project to such a big scale. I couldn’t be anywhere better right now with Covid (referring to Australia, not Melbourne—obviously). Doing Magic Mike Like was also a goal of mine so it really has been a dream come true for me.

Kitwana “Kit” Clark

Originally an American football player, Kit decided to make a serious commitment to dancing late in life. After moving to LA just over a year ago he has already worked with the likes of Nicki Minaj’, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, MC Hammer, The Jonas Brothers, KeKe Palmer, Jenn Morel, Alyson Stoner, and Kierra Sheard and more. Kit has appeared performing live on the Billboard Music Awards and the MTV Movie & TV Awards. He has assisted on choreography for JLo “It’s My Party” Tour and MC Hammer “House Party” Tour.

“I went to Aliya Janell’s heels class because I like to make heels look masculine. She booked a choreographic job with Nicki Minaj, so I went to her class and she liked the way I danced. At that point, she just got offered to choreograph for JLo’s “It’s My Party” Tour but they wanted a partner piece for men and she asked me to teach it because I attended her class. It really happened out of nowhere. I can relate to Channing Tatum’s story because most people think of him as an actor and overlook that he was a dancer first. He never really took class, his journey is so raw. I started dancing later and only then decided to turn it into a lifestyle.”
