Proud performer and Dance Captain of the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill, Romy Vuksan is “head over feet” in love with the production that is inspired by seven-time Grammy Award winner Alanis Morissette’s seminal rock album. 

Jagged Little Pill tells the tale of a seemingly perfect American family striving to hide the cracks beneath the surface when a troubling event shakes their community. Pressing on the hot topics of drug addiction, sexual assault and self-expression, Jagged Little Pill embraces today’s powerful social voice and healing that comes when people unite in protest. 

The cast ensemble—referred as the conscience—acts as a non-judgemental guide for the characters’ emotions, thoughts and storyline. Through movement, the conscience works in the style of contemporary-hip hop fusion to communicate the the inner workings of the characters. Dance Captain of Jagged Little Pill Romy Vuksan said upon her successful audition that she would ache to perform this show eight times a week. 

“Jagged Little Pill is a truly special show and an important one to watch,” said Romy. “It’s a beautiful showcase of individuality, uniqueness and skillset. All the movement comes from emotion and guttural intent—there’s a lot of freestyle elements. ”

Original Broadway choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui travelled to Sydney to work with the cast. Honoured with a Fred & Adele Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreographer in a Feature Film (2013 – Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina) and a UK Music Video Award for Best Choreography (2013 – Sigur Rós’ Valtari), Sidi Larbi made a lasting impression on the cast. 

“When Sidi arrived in Sydney, I was immediately starstruck. The way that he teaches and shows you—he is the most beautiful human dancing. He gives everyone the time of day and is so passionate about this show,” smiled Romy. 

Along with her dance captaincy, Romy has taken on the responsibility of being Swing for 15 cast members. She has had to learn everyone’s roles inside-out and be the middle person between the cast and creative team to ensure the show’s integrity.

“This time, I’m actually swinging and it’s a new journey for me. I use a program called Stage Write for the blocking of the show, which is my bible I’ve created. I truly enjoy this position …it’s a huge role but it means a lot to me,” added Romy. 

Romy trained from a young age in all aspects of the performing arts at The Ritz Performing Arts Centre. Originally from Brisbane, Romy moved to Melbourne in 2013 and was awarded a full scholarship to Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance.

Since graduating the Full Time Course in 2014, Romy has been Dance Captain for David Venn Enterprises hit national tour of The Wedding Singer, and Assistant Choreographer to Michael Ralph on James Terry’s Legally Blonde. She has worked alongside some of Australia’s best choreographers including Kelley Abbey, The Squared Division, Yvette Lee, Michael Ralph, Marko Panzic, Chris Horsey and Jason Coleman.
